Vash the Stampede est l'homme qui a une prime de 60 000 000 000 de dollars sur sa tête. La raison : c'est un méchant impitoyable qui ravage tous ceux qui s'opposent à lui et rase des villes entières pour s'amuser, ce qui lui vaut le titre de « Typhon humanoïde ». Il laisse une traînée de mort et de destruction partout où il va, et n'importe qui peut se considérer comme mort s'il ose le regarder dans les yeux, ou du moins c'est ce que disent les rumeurs. En réalité, Vash est une personne très sensible qui prétend n'avoir jamais tué personne et évite la violence à tout prix. Avec son obsession folle pour les beignets et son attitude bouffonne, Vash parcourt le désert de la planète Gunsmoke, toujours suivi par deux agents d'assurance, Meryl Stryfe et Milly Thompson, qui tentent de minimiser son impact sur le public. Mais bientôt, leurs mésaventures se transforment en situations de vie ou de mort alors qu'un groupe d'assassins légendaires est convoqué pour infliger des souffrances au trio.
